I am please to announce a photography workshop for the nocturnal photographers. This workshop is going to cover 3 different night photography genres.
- Straight night photography
- Landscape light painting (painting with lights that are not visible in the shot)
- Creative light painting (using a range of lights visible to the camera to create light painting effects)
The first workshop is going to be held on Saturday 28th Nov and Sunday 29th Nov in Mosman.
The workshop will be limited to 15 participants (Only 5 spots left).
I’m still finalising the details, but here’s how it’s shaping up.
We will be organising into 3 teams (each with a maximum of 5 photographers) and you will be working collaboratively to create the most creative light painted images that you can. While you can do night photography and creative light painting on your own, I have found that this genre really lends itself to group collaboration. Some of the lighting rigs require a few people to achieve the effects you are after, so this should be a fun workshop. Here’s how the workshop is going to be run.
Day 1: Saturday Night 4PM Start
Theory section 1: Night Photography Captures (1 hour)
- We’ll be working through the setting up of your camera for night photography
- We’ll be going through the capture process (how to focus, compose and expose at night)
Hands on section 2: Understanding the lights (1 hour)
- During the session we’ll be shooting tethered to the laptop
- I’ll be showing you where to buy creative light painting equipment and how to ruggedise it (is that a word?) for the field.
- Some of the lights we’ll be experimenting with include fluorescent lights, LED, cold cathode, EL Wire, as well as a few other surprise light sources.
- We will explore the creative potential of each light using tethered shooting so you can all instantly see the light effects captured by the camera as we make an exposure and experiment.
Dinner at Middle Harbour Fort (1 hour)
- We are going to have a picnic dinner (provided) including some beer and wine to get us in the mood for some night photography.
- While we are having dinner, and refreshments, the 3 teams can start scouting the location for their compositions that they will shoot later that night
Practical Shooting (7PM – 11:00PM)
- There are lots and lots of compositions and things to shoot at Middle Head fort.
- The three teams will be battling it out to see who can come up with the most creative lighted creations.
Day 2: Sunday Afternoon 2PM Start
- So we’ll let everybody have a sleep-in on Sunday and re-convene for the post processing work.
- Each team will work collaboratively to post-process their masterpieces.
- I’ll cover the use of layering and masking to build up your night masterpieces
- I will also go into the use of advanced layer blending modes with light painted images
- How to obtain effects using texture mapping
- We will then have the judging of the best team photograph
All participants will receive a copy of my eBook with a new section devoted to creative light painting equipment and techniques.
All participants will receive a DVD with video tutorials that encompass both the capture and processing of light painted images.
The cost for this workshop is $450 which includes dinner and workshop materials. I will be enforcing the cut-off at 15 participants, first come first served, so once you have read these details, please drop me an email to reserve your spot.
Look forward to having some fun and doing some crazy light painting with you.

Hey Wekebu
Thanks for your posting, I checked out the page you are referring to, and I’m assuming you are referring the image used on the Windows desktop screen.
No, it’s not my image (pretty similar to some of my images).
Thanks for taking the time to flag this though. I appreciate it.
